Amazon's Alexa Gets an AI Upgrade—And a British Accent
Amazon is rolling out a major overhaul to its Alexa voice assistant, introducing a more conversational AI personality powered by advanced language models. The update, branded Alexa+, is rolling out first in the UK with a more natural, engaging tone.
From Kitchen Timer to Conversational AI
For years, Alexa has languished as what marketing executives candidly described as "expensive kitchen timers" – useful for basic commands (set timer, play music, check weather) but lacking depth. While competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude leapt forward with conversational abilities, voice assistants stagnated.
That's changing. Alexa+ represents Amazon's answer to the AI revolution – a smarter, more talkative version of the voice assistant built into Echo devices worldwide.
The Personality Change
The difference is immediate. Compare these two responses to "Do I need an umbrella today?":
Current Alexa: "No rain is expected today."
Alexa+: "Actually, you can leave the brolly at home, with sunny skies and no rain in the forecast, you'll be sorted without it."
One is functional. The other feels like talking to a person who actually cares about being helpful.
Pricing and Access
Alexa+ costs £19.99 per month in the UK – but it's free for Amazon Prime members (whose annual subscription costs £95). New Echo devices get immediate access; older hardware requires opt-in via Amazon's website.
The move is significant because smart speakers have faced harsh criticism for falling behind. Google's Nest is becoming Gemini for Home (integrating Google's Gemini AI), but the hardware itself hasn't been updated since 2021. Smart speakers, it seemed, were yesterday's technology.
The Business Question
Echo has been a financial black hole for Amazon – the company has lost billions on the device category and failed to generate meaningful revenue beyond the hardware itself. Customers buy the device and then... use it. They don't subscribe to services or buy premium features.
Alexa+ is Amazon's bet that conversational AI can change that equation. Even if subscription revenue stays modest, more detailed conversations yield valuable data about user behavior – data that powers Amazon's advertising machine.
The real winner? Amazon gets richer datasets about what people ask and need.
