The arXiv preprint server is getting serious about AI-generated nonsense. The physics and astronomy community's trusted repository for cutting-edge research has announced a clear policy: submit AI-fabricated content, and you're banned for a year.

The Problem Gets Real

AI-generated hallucinations—fake citations, unedited prompt responses, and nonsensical diagrams—have been slipping past peer reviewers and into published literature. Earlier this year, a peer-reviewed paper featured an AI-generated rat with anatomically impossible genitals. It was embarrassing. It undermined trust in the entire system.

The scientific community has had enough.

The New Rules

Thomas Dietterich, an emeritus professor at Oregon State University and member of arXiv's editorial advisory council, announced the new enforcement policy via social media. The core rule is simple: arXiv's moderation standards require "appropriate and carefully prepared sections, figures, tables, references, etc." General scrupulousness is mandatory.

When violations are discovered—inappropriate language, plagiarized content, errors, incorrect references, or misleading content generated by AI—all authors listed on the manuscript face consequences:

• One-year submission ban from arXiv
• Future manuscripts can only be accepted after peer review by a journal

For fields that live and die by preprints (astrophysics, particle physics, astrobiology), these are severe sanctions. Publishing on arXiv is part of the normal research process. Losing access cripples collaboration and community feedback.

Why This Matters

For researchers, the policy is a reminder: you're responsible for what you submit, regardless of who—or what—generated it. If you use an AI tool, you're liable for its output. No exceptions.

For the broader scientific community, it's a necessary boundary. Preprints are supposed to be the cutting edge of research, not the dumping ground for AI-generated slop. Maintaining that standard requires enforcement.

The system does include an appeal process for those who believe they've been unfairly sanctioned. Dietterich also notes that moderation has always been part of arXiv's mission. This isn't new policy—it's enforcement of existing standards, finally taken seriously.
