Ariane 6 Launches 32 Amazon Leo Satellites in Second Successful Flight
Arianespace's Ariane 6 rocket continues to prove its capability, launching another batch of 32 Amazon Leo satellites to low Earth orbit on April 30, 2026.
A Second Success for Ariane 64
This mission, designated VA268, represents the second flight of Ariane 6 in its most powerful configuration—the Ariane 64 variant with four strap-on solid rocket boosters. The rocket lifted off at 4:57 a.m. EDT from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, successfully deploying all 32 satellites in less than 2 hours.
The first Ariane 64 test flight occurred in February 2026, also carrying 32 Amazon Leo satellites. With today's success, the rocket has proven reliable for high-cadence constellation deployments.
Amazon Leo: The Kuiper Alternative
Amazon Leo—formerly known as Project Kuiper—is Amazon's answer to SpaceX's Starlink broadband megaconstellation. While Starlink boasts over 10,000 operational satellites and continues expanding, Amazon Leo will eventually consist of approximately 3,200 spacecraft, offering global broadband coverage with lower latency than traditional satellite internet.
The constellation buildout requires more than 80 launches across multiple rocket providers. To date, 11 missions have successfully delivered Amazon Leo satellites. Recent launches include an Atlas V carrying 29 satellites on April 27, followed by this Ariane 6 deployment just three days later.
Long-Term Partnership
Amazon has committed to a total of 18 Ariane 6 flights for the constellation, with 16 more planned launches beyond today's mission. Additional launches will utilize SpaceX's Falcon 9 and United Launch Alliance's Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur rockets.
This diversified launch strategy reflects industry confidence in multiple rocket providers while reducing dependence on any single launch service. For satellite internet operators, having multiple rideshare options accelerates deployment schedules and improves supply chain resilience.
